Deacon Blue – The great western road (2025)

Sono trascorsi 40 anni da quando Ricky Ross e Dougie Vipond dettero vita ai Deacon Blue, band pop rock scozzese formata a Glasgow nel 1985. Il gruppo è guidato dal duo vocale (e coppia nella vita) composto da Ricky Ross e Lorraine McIntosh, con James Prime alle tastiere, Dougie Vipond alla batteria, Gregor Philp alla chitarra e Lewis Gordon al basso.
Il nome della band è ispirato al brano degli Steely Dan “Deacon blues”.
Il loro più grande successo avviene negli anni ’80 e ’90, grazie ad album come Raintown (1987) e When the world knows your name (1989), quest’ultimo raggiunse la vetta delle classifiche inglesi. Un sound che mixava sapientemente gli elementi “new romantic” con arrangiamenti e melodie ispirate alla black music, al “bue eyed soul”, ma anche alle melodie scozzesi, con testi fortemente emozionali e metriche estremamente orecchiabili; come non dimenticare ad esempio l’ipnotica “Twist and shout” del 1991 da “Fellow hoodlums”.
Dopo una pausa tra il 1994 e il 1999, la band si è riunita e ha continuato a pubblicare musica, con album recenti come City of Love (2020) e Riding on the Tide of Love (2021).
Questo 33 giri “The great western road” è dedicato a una delle più importanti strade della città di Glasgow; è stato registrato da Matt Butler, che aveva già lavorato con la band per il loro debutto, “Raintown”, nei leggendari Rockfield Studios, dove Ricky Ross e Gregor Philp (chitarrista dei Deacon Blue e collaboratore di lunga data) sono tornati a occuparsi della produzione.
